Review: Emily The Criminal

A film with a simple title and premise and yet surprisingly offered a lot more than I expected.

All that intrigued was the casting of Aubrey Plaza, who has become a more than accomplished actor. A long with some solid buzz, I was expecting Plaza to carry the film.

While that is the case up to a point, there is more to appreciate and praise.

I liked how the main topic it explores and covers is the flaws in America's society and how people are driven to a life of crime because of it.
It is also seen as a solid character study of someone with all the potential to succeed. But society won't let her and forces our main character into taking risks to maintain a reasonable living.

So much of this is thanks to Aubrey Plaza, who gives a really good performance in the leading role. Plaza showed true strength and authenticity and continues to extend her range. The more I see of her, the more confident I feel Plaza will receive an Oscar sooner rather later.
It was also great seeing Theo Rossi in this, as I remember him from seeing 'Sons Of Anarchy'.

Everything else is pretty solid. There are some cool sequences that are well shot, and the tension is ramped up at a steady pace.

All in all it's a sharp and effective grounded crime thriller with a simple idea that is well utilised. A lot of it is thanks to Plaza. Her character is very exciting to watch and is given some situations that makes for gripping viewing. This could have easily been a forgettable middle-of-the-road watch. But with it being more than just the story, it gives the film some unexpected weight that will make it a lot more memorable compared to similar films to it.

Rating: 7/10
